The Cuban Parrot, also called the Cuban Amazon or Rose-throated Parrot, is a medium-sized parrot native to the dry forests of Cuba, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands.
Appearance[]
The Cuban Parrot is mainly green, with a white to pale lemon forehead. The upper chest, neck and cheeks are rosy pink, perhaps with a salmon tint. The abdomen is dull reddish. Irises are dark green, and the ears are dark green-black. This parrot is 11 to 13 inches from head to tail-tip.
Behavior, Captive Life and Conservation[]
The Cuban Parrot diets mainly on fruits and seeds. Groups flock together in winter, splitting into pairs for breeding. Two to four eggs are laid, and, as with most parrot species, both parents assist in rearing.
This bird is becoming increasingly common in captivity; however, unnatural aggression often occurs. The Cuban is possibly the most expensive Amazon parrot to obtain. Unfortunately, due to wild capture for the pet trade, as well as habitat loss, the Rose-throated Parrot is listed as Near-Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
